Connecting communities through dance

We’re proud to support Bangarra on their journey to create experiences that change society.

Our partnership with Bangarra enables the company to bring world-class dance to the world, to connect with Indigenous youth through their outreach program, and collaborate with more communities through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling.

As a Major Partner, BAI Communications supports the overall operations of Bangarra Dance Theatre, encompassing an extensive annual touring schedule to Australian regional centres, capital cities and international venues, as well as the delivery of community initiatives.

Bangarra’s relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are at the heart of everything the company does. Unlike other major arts organisations, Bangarra creates their mainstage contemporary dance productions on Country, in consultation with community Elders. As the involvement of community members is a vital part of the company’s creative life cycle, Bangarra ensures it gives back to the very people who inspire its work, through the delivery of a range of community and youth outreach initiatives. These include the following:

  • Rekindling is Bangarra’s flagship youth outreach program. Its vision is to inspire pride, kinship and a sense of strength in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a series of dance residencies with secondary school-aged students. Participants research and gather stories with guidance from Elders within their communities, developing skills to produce thought-provoking performances and community events.
  • Regional workshops are delivered by Bangarra dancers for local communities, as part of the company’s annual regional tour. In Bangarra’s 2018 regional tour to Bendigo, Geelong, Warragul, Alice Springs and Cairns, almost 600 people participated in workshops, dance masterclasses and meet and greet sessions across the venues, deepening their engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and storytelling.
  • Bangarra’s Wilay program offers tickets at a significantly reduced rate, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to attend dedicated matinee performances in Melbourne and Sydney. These sessions are followed by a Q&A session offering insights into the company’s creative process, and also an opportunity for students to meet the dancers. Bangarra also offers in-depth, curriculum-linked free Study Guides for teachers, to continue the impact of Bangarra performances when students return to the classroom.
  • Return to Country closes the circle of each work created by Bangarra, with the company sharing the production in a free performance for the community who inspired the work – on Country, in the place where it began. Return to Country performances are also accompanied by dance and storytelling workshops offered for free to the local community, and led by Bangarra’s world–class dance ensemble.
