This week BAI Communications is attending the SmartTransit USA Conference in Philadelphia. SmartTransit is the go-to event for senior transit industry figures from across North America, and this year’s event will look at how digitalization, connectivity and technology is revolutionizing transit, from enhanced analytics technologies to real-time passenger information systems.

Positioned at booth E6, BAI will be showcasing its Onboard Network Connectivity Solution (ONCS) via a live demonstration. The ONCS replicates a typical onboard train Wi-Fi experience by placing network nodes on rolling stock as opposed to a pure platform-based solution.

When it comes to bringing Wi-Fi to a large-scale transit system, one of the biggest challenges faced by transit authorities is maintaining seamless connectivity for riders travelling from stations to tunnels, as well as the ability to handle peak loads. In New York and Toronto, more than 850,000 users connect to the Wi-Fi network each weekday. The network needs to be able to sustain those peak loads throughout the day and maintain impeccable data speed.

The main advantage of the ONCS rather than a station-located solution is seamless, high quality connectivity throughout a journey. Conference attendees will be able to see for themselves how riders can access Wi-Fi and various online applications onboard trains. They will also be able to see how fast and robust the solution is, that there are no blackspots, just seamless performance – at Gigabit speeds.

About BAI Communications

BAI delivers high-quality communications infrastructure to large-scale transit systems, partnering with and improving outcomes for transit operators and enhancing the travel experience for commuters in New York (Transit Wireless), Toronto and Hong Kong. Visitors to SmartTransit can also hear more about how this infrastructure can be harnessed for additional solutions such as Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning and how our systems are architected to make data insights programmatically accessible in real time to efficiently inform operational systems.

Across the globe, BAI has implemented fare card payment solutions, digital asset connectivity, enhanced monitoring and other operational efficiencies for transit authorities. As global communications experts, we design, build and operate connectivity solutions that enable multiple layered applications. Rather than provide a turnkey solution, we align our objectives with that of our transit authority partners, we work together to ensure mutual success.
