Broadcast Australia was recently recognised for the successful rollout of DVB-S2 for the ABC & SBS, winning the award for Infrastructure Rollout at the Content & Technology ABE Awards.
The ABE Show is a leading annual trade event for the media and entertainment industry in Australia and New Zealand bringing together hundreds of professionals from around the region. This year’s conference theme was ‘Empowering Content Production and Delivery Technology’.
The Extended capabilities of the DVB-S2 standard allows for merged (ISI) streams to be carried on the one transponder. This means that ABC and SBS can each carry all of their regional programming variations across Australia on a single satellite transponder, each freeing up a transponder on the Optus D1 satellite.
Broadcast Australia successfully transitioned the national broadcasters to DVB-S2, on time and under budget. The project scope included upgrading all satellite downlink demodulators/ receivers to next generation technology for the broadcasters by the December 1 2017. The project which began in March 2017, was completed ahead of schedule. In summary 458 services were transitioned, 372 receivers were installed, and 293 sites upgraded.
The success of the transition is a testament to the hard work of all those involved, to ensure all milestones were met along the way and issues were resolved in a timely manner. Broadcast Australia Chief Executive Officer, Peter Lambourne said “Broadcast Australia delivered an innovative broadcast solution to its customers, by harnessing the full capabilities of the technology offered by the satellite down link demodulators/ receivers”
