Connectivity outlook report – London

Smarter cities, smarter future

It’s often said COVID-19 changed how people work, but it may be more accurate to say it accelerated the trend toward remote and hybrid models. In London, passengers are not only comfortable working while they travel, but they also expect to be able to do so. They want better, reliable connectivity to ensure they can be more productive on the go.

For three years, BAI Communications has conducted an annual survey of public transport users in major cities around the world. In 2021, we reached more than 2,500 passengers in Sydney, Hong Kong, London, New York and Toronto, for the first time gathering perspectives beyond rail to include light rail, buses and ferries.

Londoners want a safer, more connected, more sustainable transport network. They’re looking for a person-first experience enhanced by apps that prioritise passenger productivity, safety and comfort, and support government investment in a smarter transport future.

What do Londoners want from their public transport?

Reliable networks

They are interested in more reliable networks that can support advanced communication, connection and work while commuting.

Sustainable technologies

They support government investment in sustainable technologies that could reduce the carbon footprint of public transport.

Brendan O'Reilly on the importance of connectivity

"The last two years have forever changed how people view their city’s public transport networks. As they return to work and to travel, they now expect a fully connected, better integrated and smarter experience. By embracing advanced connectivity solutions, transport authorities can meet these expectations and grow their ridership."
