Connectivity outlook report – Sydney

A digital foundation for a smart future

Australia’s booming population growth is driving the need for increased investments in infrastructure and public services. When it comes to public transport, what passengers in Sydney value most is a seamless, connected and safe experience.

For three years, BAI Communications has conducted an annual survey of public transport users in major cities around the world. In 2021, we reached more than 2,500 passengers in Sydney, Hong Kong, London, New York and Toronto, for the first time gathering perspectives beyond rail to include light rail, buses and ferries.

Years of growth have spurred demand for enhanced, future-ready public transport in and around Australia’s largest city. Thousands of people move through the transport system every day. With vibrant communities growing along Sydney’s rail corridors, strategically planning and delivering a highly connected public transport network is the key to increasing ridership as Australia emerges from the pandemic.

What do Sydneysiders want from their public transport?

Passengers want a more connected transport experience, from stronger Wi-Fi and work-on-the-go flexibility to trip-enhancing alerts about delays and crowding.

Brendan O'Reilly on the importance of connectivity

"The last two years have forever changed how people view their city’s public transport networks. As they return to work and to travel, they now expect a fully connected, better integrated and smarter experience. By embracing advanced connectivity solutions, transport authorities can meet these expectations and grow their ridership."
