Broadcast Australia Change Management Lead Beth Sloane has put her charity and volunteer leave to good use, spending a weekend with grief education and support program Camp Magic.
Inspired by the BAI Communications Australian Human Resources/Health, Safety, Environment and Quality team, who used their leave to assist the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), Ms Sloane attended Camp Magic as the mentor of 7-year-old camper Eli.
“Camp Magic is all about kids learning to understand their grief and break down the isolation that the children often feel when they lose someone that they love,” Ms Sloane said.
“That was the resounding thought from all of our campers at the end of the day; I’m not alone anymore.
“All of the adults and kids became the best support for each other, and through the shared experience of grief, were able to connect and help each other.
“We went on numerous bushwalks, played Wacky Olympics, and also completed the low ropes course – complete with splinters of course. One of my favourite moments was when Eli wanted to go on a bushwalk one afternoon, so we decided to see who else wanted to come and before we knew it, we had the whole team on the bushwalk!
“Being at Camp Magic was one of the most amazing and humbling experiences of my life and I can’t wait for the next camp which I hope to attend again as a mentor.”
