NEW YORK, USA, 30th June 2016: Transit Wireless, a majority-owned BAI Communications company, received a top honor in the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s (WBA) World Wi-Fi Day Case Study Awards for designing, building and deploying the cellular and Wi-Fi communications network in the 279 underground stations of the New York City subway system. Transit Wireless received the “Best Wi-Fi Deployment to Connect the Unconnected in an Urban Environment” award at a gala dinner at the WBA’s Wireless Global Congress in Liverpool, England on June 29.

World Wi-Fi Day Case Study Awards honor the success of Wi-Fi deployments that address the digital divide and make Wi-Fi accessible to unconnected communities. For the “Best Wi-Fi Deployment to Connect the Unconnected in Urban Environment” award, the judges evaluated the complexity and scale, the challenges overcome and the innovation of specific deployments. Additionally, the judges assessed the market impact of various projects in helping to bridge the digital divide and connect communities.
Transit Wireless is working to bring Wi-Fi service to all 279 MTA underground subway stations by the end of 2016, with cellular service rolling out as soon as possible. The company is expanding its service offerings to customers as it delivers cellular, Wi-Fi and public safety services to all of New York City’s underground subway stations two years ahead of its contract schedule.
Receiving the award on behalf of Transit Wireless was BAI Canada’s Chief Executive Officer Ken Ranger. As a sister company of Transit Wireless, BAI Canada has partnered with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and built an equally impressive Wi-Fi network in the Toronto subway providing high quality connectivity to the riders and businesses throughout the system carrying 1.5 million riders per day. Transit Wireless and BAI Canada’s Wi-Fi networks utilize common design, deployment and management systems.
On June 20, BAI Communications and Transit Wireless participated in the WBA’s World Wi-Fi Day to recognize and celebrate the important role of Wi-Fi in connecting cities and communities around the world to bridge the digital divide.
