In Australia, BAI Communications is investing in a new mast to deliver ABC Local Radio to the Townsville area. After 3 years of detailed planning, today BAI began the process of replacing the existing mast. The project is expected to run for three-and-a-half months, with completion scheduled for early November 2020, subject to weather.
The existing mast, owned and operated by BAI, was built in 1959 and stands at 198m tall. As part of BAI’s commitment to proactive network reinvestment, it will be replaced with a new 236m guyed mast, making it the tallest structure in the BAI network.
The new mast is engineered to withstand stronger cyclonic winds than the current mast, therefore it will be more resilient against extreme weather events.
This technically challenging job will involve demolition and removal of the existing mast, where the steel will be recycled. Following the completion of these works, BAI and specialist contractors will then erect a new – 115-tonne steel – MF Radio guyed mast.
Over 40 people have been engaged with this project including RF specialist engineers, structural engineers, civil engineers, riggers, and project management. The project draws on BAI’s high level of expertise in system design, network planning, and implementation – as well as its strong project management and procurement capabilities.
