The rapidly growing Toronto Region is home to 7.8 million people and as well as being the economic engine of both Ontario and Canada, has gained a strong reputation for digital and tech excellence. And at the heart of this development has been the modernisation of the city’s transport network – which includes the delivery of Wi-Fi and cellular services to the TTC subway system.
In cities across the globe, wireless connectivity is driving the trend towards a transit experience that’s smart, safe, fun and fluid. In Singapore, Wi-Fi data is being used to monitor and improve passenger flow. In Seoul, free Wi-Fi is available across the entire city, streamlining every experience from catching a train to parking a car. Now it’s Toronto’s turn.
The City of Toronto has launched multiple projects that aim to harness the power of cutting-edge technology to better serve its residents, in the quest to become a “smarter city”. These include smart traffic pilot projects that respond to real-time traffic patterns, a mini smart city on the waterfront and the recent completion of a wireless communications network by BAI Canada.
“Passengers want to experience the same connectivity on their commute as they do everywhere else, whether at work, at home or on the move. They also want to travel safely and easily above and below ground, accessing the information they need reliably and without interruption.”
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has launched a bold campaign and mobile app as part of its commitment to combat harassment in all forms and enhance public safety while riding the TTC.
BAI Canada has committed to a full rollout of Wi-Fi and cellular infrastructure across the subway system, and plans to bring 24 additional stations online by the end of 2016 – almost doubling the size of the current rollout.
